36 Questions for Increasing Closeness

There’s a common theme to Netflix’s last two dating shows — “Love is Blind,” and now “Too Hot to Handle” — as each thinly hides its desire to ridicule the people who participate in these exercises behind the guise of a “dating experiment,” built around depriving them of one of their senses. In “Love is Blind,” the potential partners can’t see each other.

Both shows, notably, couch the concept as a means of building a deeper romantic connection. Spared from the shallowness of physical attraction — or the confusing aspects of “hanky panky,” as “Too Hot’s” press notes coyly put it — the players can determine whether they truly like each other based on more than just looks or sex. But who’s kidding whom? The whole tone of “Too Hot to Handle,” especially, involves goofing on the participants in wry voiceover, leveraging everything we’ve come to know about such characters from “The Bachelor,” “Temptation Island” and every other dating show spun out of those molds.

When I did these questions with Mark, I was doing online dating at the time. And I often felt like, on these dates, you are meeting someone new.

Southwest Research Institute scientists have increased the speed and accuracy of a laboratory-scale instrument for determining the age of planetary specimens onsite. CODEX will be a little larger than a microwave and include seven lasers and a mass spectrometer. In situ measurements will address fundamental questions of solar system history, such as when Mars was potentially habitable. Then the other CODEX lasers selectively pick out and quantify the abundance of trace amounts of radioactive rubidium Rb and strontium Sr.

An isotope of Rb decays into Sr over known amounts of time, so by measuring both Rb and Sr, we can determine how much time has passed since the rock formed.

Kerry Cronin, PhD, believes in dating. As a professor of philosophy at Boston College and a fellow at the Center for Student Formation, Cronin has met hundreds of students in her more than 20 years of teaching, counseling, and mentoring at the Jesuit university. It is a lost art that she is trying to reestablish by giving them a dating assignment. There is a deep irony in this story, however.

At 52, Cronin is single and only occasionally dates. Her family is amused that she gives this assignment to her students. Anthony Messenger. When the film was released, wherever they were across the country, they went to see it, and they love it. Cronin decided to assign dating to her students—first for extra credit and then for a grade. The idea was not to marry them off.

Instead, she wanted them to experience traditional dating as an alternative to the hook-up culture. Her students acknowledge that talking to someone face-to-face can be harder than having sex in the dark with someone they barely know.

When dating, I seem to automatically seek what I’ve already sought: charming pseudo-intellectuals, suggestive and flirtatious, but essentially not interested in me.

I chase after half-nothings and loose ends who will keep me occupied, but not attached. If we can change our exercise and diet habits, can we make over our dating lives?

Cronin’s experiment is the subject of the recent documentary The Dating Project. “It is a productive time for good questions, so I respond by asking them to.
